How to Move Toward Your Purpose and Destiny

Marshall: You know, there’s some spiritual teaching out there in the world that really emphasizes just living for the moment as a kind of way to escape anxiety and fearfulness and regret and…Just live for the moment, like a frog in a pond, or, you know, a lily in the field. You know it’s only gonna live for a few days, but that’s beside the point. But that’s kind of an escape. It’s another form of escape, living just for the moment. You don’t need to plan for the future. Things will work out. They always work out.
The problem with that perspective is that you were born with a purpose and you cannot rid yourself of it. You can live at the surface. You can be constantly mesmerised and absorbed in things, fantasies and stimulation and romance and what you’re going to do this weekend and every minute taken up with something to keep you occupied, like you’re an experience junkie. You have to have more and more experience. But you live with this purpose. And it doesn’t go away.
And this is one of the reasons why people do not want to go within themselves. There’s something in there that may drive them in a different direction, the direction to which they’ve already committed themselves or invested in. Something’s in there.
And it comes up from time to time with a feeling or a sensation or a desire, a desire that cannot be fulfilled by anything they’re doing, anything they see, anything the world has to offer, a thirst, hunger. “I must do something about this that I just heard about. I’m here to do something, something important.”
And with purpose, there comes destiny because the purpose is trying to take you somewhere to do something. It’s not a blank check. It actually is a prescription. It’s a blueprint. And you need to get wherever that is. So you have a destiny, a destiny in being here.
And this runs counter to anything the world can teach you, tell you, persuade you to do, manipulate you to do, anything—purpose and destiny. So even a big bad future has purpose and destiny written all over it.
So at the end of the revelation that we heard last night, The Great Turning Point for Humanity, is this: They said, this is the best thing for you. After they scare the hell out of you, they say, this is the best thing for you. Without this, you’re adrift; you’re confused; you’re lost; you fall into despair and depression eventually as you age. And somehow, whatever it was in life that was supposed to happen—should have happened, could have happened, would have happened—did not happen, that purpose and destiny unfulfilled.
And if your purpose and destiny is to be part of something really big, then wow, that’s an even more powerful force within you that keeps you from becoming entirely complacent, or satisfied with little things, or interested in people who can only be superficial and who do not want to dig very deeply into anything.
So your relationship with the future means you have destiny there. Otherwise, if you only live for the moment like all of the creatures, most of the creatures, sure, but destiny doesn’t mean anything, the future doesn’t mean anything. You’ll live and then one day you’ll die, which is okay until you get to that one day.
But it isn’t okay because in the meantime you’re living with this unmet need that is so fundamental that nothing you can do, no amount of therapy or indulgence or acquisition can satisfy this thing. As you mature, you lose interest in the illusions of the world—if you’re maturing—and bigger things begin to arrive to concern you, some of them very important.
This is bringing you closer to purpose and destiny. And for other people, they feel this when they’re young, in adolescence, even childhood, and it never goes away. It’s a great thing, but difficult.
So when the Assembly says, “This is perfect for you,” what does that mean? How can that be perfect for me? I don’t see happiness. I don’t see comfort. I don’t see peace. I don’t see joy in this picture. But they say, “It’s perfect for you.”
I’m gonna leave that question with you. I think it is important because there’s something in most of us, to some degree, that just wants to be happy, comfortable and undisturbed by the world, right? Right!
It may be a big force; it may be a small force, but it’s still there. Take this cup from me, please. I don’t want to know these things. I’m not gonna read this book. I don’t want to feel what I might feel reading this book. Scared but also moved; put off but also attracted, as if something has spoken to that unfulfilled need of the soul, but the surface of you just does not want to deal with this.
Some people get Steps to Knowledge and it sits on their bookcase for five or ten years. And then they reach some point in life where they think, “Maybe I should look at this book.” It’s okay.
So I’m saying all these things because your relationship with the future has to do with why you’re here in the truest sense, the biggest sense, that seems to go beyond personal desires, needs, ideas of fulfillment.
For instance, I mean, many people would say, in building a new life, “Well, I’ve always wanted to live near the ocean and if I could, I would.” Or “I want to live in the mountains, see big mountains and I would if I could.” “I wanna live in the desert. I love the stars at night and the landscapes, planetary landscapes. I wanna live in the desert.”
But all three of those options would be very poor choices in a new world reality. Can you imagine why? The ocean part is pretty obvious.
So we have this force in us that wants to engage us in something that we’re pretty ambivalent about. So at some point, the attraction gains 51%, and the resistance begins to wear down. And you step closer and closer and you actually want to know more. And you actually feel safer, knowing more.
You don’t want to be one of these people who say to themselves, “I never saw it coming,” as their life gets dashed by some economic event, or natural event, or personal health calamity.
So the New Message puts a lot of emphasis on building a new life, a life of purpose, meaning and direction. A new life is very attractive in comparison to the life you may be living now. So we imbue the attraction. But the new life is going to happen within this new world reality. There’s nowhere on Earth that you are going to escape this new world reality. So that’s the truth of the matter. And it kind of pushes you into the bigger side of you because there’s no way you can assure you’re going to get what you want or be comfortable or have peace and equanimity, and still go into this new world reality.
And a lot of spiritual teaching and study is simply an escape from destiny, a kind of personal pacification program. And we have other forces in the Earth right now that are supporting that.
So I’ve been thinking about this, this new life. And the New Message casts it in a very different reality because if you think of it apart from reality, then you are fantasizing. You are creating a fantasy for yourself that you may invest yourself in, even practically, economically, personally, living a dream, “I have a dream of living here. I fell in love with this town. I fell in love with this beach.” Sounds pretty stupid, doesn’t it? Yeah, but it’s very common.
People have a romance with a place just as easily is they have a romance with a face. And it has nothing to do with who they are. It has nothing to do with what’s happening in the world. It has nothing to do with what’s coming over the horizon. It has nothing to do with their greater purpose. And they will invest themselves in these things immensely.
So you can’t think about them now because you cannot save them. They may have an epiphany at some point, wake up shaking one morning, and realize that everything they’ve built is on sand, has no permanence, and probably will be destroyed or burned down or abandoned. So the important thing is the approach, and that’s what I want to talk about tonight a little bit.
You have a relationship with the future. Aside from immediate goals, you may not think about it very much, like the next thing you need to do in your work, your education, or what you’re going to do with your house, what you’re going to do with a person. I’m talking about your future future and the fact that you have purpose and you have destiny. And honesty will always bring you closer to these things because they’re irrefutable and, at some level, cannot be denied.
Then you’ll want to know the truth because the truth will bring you closer to that purpose and that destiny. If the world is going here, “Okay, I’m going there, too,” which is true anyway. And you begin to think about your life now within a larger context, which will moderate some of your desires and change some of your thoughts and beliefs but will give you a better grounding in where you’re going and what you’re about to invest yourself in, which is a good thing.
The New Message says that destiny is everything in relationships, in work, in health, service, purpose, meaning and direction because beneath our intellect is a blueprint of where we need to get to in life, generally. Taking into account the vicissitudes of life and the changing conditions of the Earth, there’s a rendezvous that must happen, there’s places of realization that must take place, and there’s encounters that will be very meaningful to you.
So we’re all in that boat now and at some point, you’ll look at this revelation, The Great Turning Point, which seems so strong and dire and urgent, and you’ll say, “Yes, I want to do that. I want to do that. That’s got my name on it. That speaks to me,” instead of everything that proceeds that was, “I don’t know. Well, maybe, but you know, it could be different. And technology will probably solve it. And, you know, we need a new president and that will probably get us down the road.” You get out of this kind of meaningless dialogue with yourself, self-pacification. You say, “Wow, this is it. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it. I don’t know where to go.”
But see that’s fine. You don’t create the journey. You just need to get on the journey. You will need to navigate the journey, which is taking care of your life and all the affairs of your life and making decisions and being accountable for them. But the journey is…It has already set a direction for you, not just a specific road you have to walk because the Earth is too changeable for that to be reliable.
Just can you get to this point and meet these people within a certain amount of time? And Knowledge within you is all about getting you there, which is not a life of quiet contemplation or serenity. It’s action. Purpose and destiny mean action. Otherwise, it’s just a nice idea. You can feel warm and fuzzy about it, but nothing is going to happen from it.
So that’s my message for tonight—purpose and destiny. And this is what saves you in the end because as long as you can bridge that gap within your lifetime, in a meaningful way…And the Earth around us is now becoming a force for this also because if we all lived in quiet suburbia, nothing would be happening. We would be slumbering in listless self-satisfaction. We’d be dreaming. We would not be here.
So in a way, they said this because ultimately this will be true for you. And the people you will meet and what you will do will be the source of your reconciliation internally, your healing internally, your escape from the past and the elevation of your real skills. And it will not be conferred upon you. You will have to build it and earn it and acquire it.
So I say take the news from the world as the kind of stimulation you need to not fall back into the shadows of confusion and ambivalence and bargaining, and you will feel your strength. And then doing the things that you just couldn’t do before, you just do them. They are hard, some of them are hard, some of them are easy. Just do it. “I need to get this out of my way.” Just do them. Then you’re moving. Then Knowledge can now begin to talk to you. If you’re not moving, I mean, Knowledge can say to you “You need to move. Move.” But when you’re moving, then you have navigation, you have choices, you have decisions, you have direction. That’s really where Knowledge begins to become a more active agent and not a potential agent for you. Okay.
And then the fear of the future, I mean, it’s pretty daunting. They won’t even tell me what they see, but it’s certainly inescapable.
So here we are. Somehow your name got called, pulled out of the paper file. “Ah yes, we know him. Let’s pull him out of the crowd. Let’s stir him, her.”

Thank you dear Marshall for the wisdom and the clarity in this. I often feel/sense the/my future and yet Know I have still to get rid of any baggage to move forward. Even though these days I feel pretty clear, a great wave of something past will stir itself for release and then the move forward takes place. I get depressed when I feel I do not have purpose, it has been the great motivator of my life above everything and I am in deep gratitude that I began The Return and The Engagement to a greater purpose and destiny. The future I can feel ahead and the reality of the present that I must be part of and deal with. Nasi Novare Coram
This is resonating, and reminded me of one experience I had of my relationship with the future. And yes, those moments even during childhood and adolescent, it is true for me.
I remember when I was around 15 or 16, I had a moment, while walking down the night streets of Taipei City, as if I was taken out of reality to a different state. And at that moment, I looked out onto the streets of this big city — all the bright neon lights, the busy crowd bustling here and there, all the brightly-lit stores everywhere along the street… and at that moment, all these were blurry, distant, and felt so surreal to me … and I was confused of what reality really is. I felt a deep yearning, deep restlessness, dissatisfaction and disappointment with everything and with life, as if I was trapped by life, and I yearned to be free… and I asked desperately, earnestly and impatiently, to myself and to that empty space that opened in my mind, “IS THIS IT? IS THIS IT TO LIFE? To work in the day and then to buy things in the evening, all your life. Is that all there is?” Soon after this experience, I had an opportunity to leave my family and go to Canada, and I had not a trace of doubt that I must go.
My past had a relationship with the future, which is my present. And even then, even younger, it had been a lifetime journey searching for the NM.
“At a certain point in your life, if you are really honest with yourself and with your circumstances and agreements with others, you will come to a point where your life will begin to change fundamentally. This change will happen on the inside first because it is born of a deeper recognition, the recognition that you are not living the life you were meant to live and that you are not fulfilling the greater purpose that has brought you into the world.
This stands in great contrast to your former emphasis, which is one of acquisition and advancement according to your ideas and the ideas of your culture and nation. Now something really different has happened. An awakening has begun—an awakening to a deeper realm within yourself, a deeper experience. And though it may seem momentary and fragmentary at this point, it is enough to initiate a great shift in your life.
This is the beginning of the return—the return to relationship and communication, the return to your connection with those who sent you into the world and with the greater purpose that has brought you here, a purpose that cannot be realized through intellectual inquiry alone, for it lives within you at this moment, waiting to be discovered.
This has to do with your relationship with God and your Spiritual Family, who sent you here. It has to do with a deeper responsibility and accountability that exceeds that which you assume with others around you—even with your family, even with your nation. For your greater commitment is to Creation and to God, for this is what has brought you into the world, fundamentally.
The return is a key turning point. And though it might seem inconsequential and slight at the outset, a very fragile beginning, if you will stay with this, if you will honor this, if you will follow what the deeper Knowledge within you is guiding you to do, if you will stop pretending about your life and indulging yourself in things that have no promise or destiny, then the return will begin to build momentum and become stronger with each decision that you make in alignment with it.
It is like a revolution on the inside, where something greater is going to take over, greater in you—more real, more powerful, more essential. And all that is false and fragmentary and temporary is overshadowed by this greater force and power that God has put within you, awaiting the time when you would come to your senses, waiting for a time of a deeper recognition, when a greater power and a greater destiny could emerge within you.
This is what Heaven waits for, you see. All that happened previous to this is really inconsequential except that it could have led you so far astray that the turning point might never happen. To prevent this, counsel has been given to you previously, but your mind was so obsessed and taken up that it is like you did not hear it or feel it sufficiently to heed its warnings, to follow its recommendations.
So Heaven waits for the beginning of the return and the meaning of the return for you. You will not understand it at the outset. And you will not understand it for a long time to come. But you follow this because it is natural and essential and comes from the most reliable part of you, beyond the realm and the reach of the intellect.
It is the most important event of your life. But at the outset, it will be very confusing because now you seem to have competing agendas. Part of you wants to go one way; part of you wants to go another. You have conflicting goals. It is very confusing, you see.
But it is merely the result of the greater voice within you emerging and competing with what you have been following all along, which is the voice of your culture, the voice of your fear, the voice of your desire and the voice of others telling you who you should be, what you should be and what you should do and so forth, which has been there since the day you were born.
Now something else is taking place. Now your life is becoming really important. It has the potential for being this. And though you have a long way to go and your beginning is fragile and uncertain, Heaven will begin to pay attention to you. It will pay attention to you also because it is so easy to fail and to fall back into the shadows at the outset. Your deeper incentive, though real and consistent, has to compete with greater forces in your mind and circumstances that want to lead you back into your former life.
But the journey begins with disappointment, when you begin to see the goals you have followed have failed you and will fail you. Even if you attempt them again and again, they will not lead to what you are really looking for. Success, romance, falling in love, pleasure, excitement—you will see none of these will ever give you what you are really looking for, which is a deeper connection in life and a fulfillment of a greater destiny that has brought you here in the first place.
Now Heaven begins to pay attention to you because you need its strength.
There are things you must overcome. There are things you must set aside. There are decisions that are consequential that you must make. Some of them are very big and significant. Some of them are small, but still important.
From this point on, you are either strengthening yourself or weakening yourself. You are moving forward or moving backwards. You are swimming or you are sinking. So everything you do, every commitment you make, every decision now becomes more significant because the outcome is so very important.
You have begun a greater journey—the most important journey of your life, the most important journey of anyone’s life, a journey back to your Source, a journey back to redemption and integration with your deeper nature, which is represented by Knowledge.
Now the part of you that has wandered in Separation begins to reconnect with the part of you that has never left God. This is the great Homecoming, but it is not happening in a moment, or in a great realization, or in a flash of lightning. It is a journey you must take. For you are here to give something to the world, and it is in the process of doing this that you begin to truly reunite with your true Self.
But your desires are still there. Your regrets are still there. Your hostilities are still there. You have not escaped them yet. Your weakness is still there. Your vulnerability to manipulation and persuasion and admonition from others is still there. You have the shadows and the overcast of your past—staying with you, pulling you back, pulling you down. It is still there.
God does not wipe all this away. God gives you something important to do, and that is the journey out of your hopeless dilemma, your hopeless pursuit for happiness and fulfillment, your hopeless pursuit for true security and meaning. God gives you the way out by giving you something important to do in the world because the world needs the contribution from you, and contribution is the only reason to be here anyway, the only thing that will satisfy the deeper yearning of your heart. True relationship and true contribution—this is what you are really looking for.
Until the return was initiated, you were looking for other things. Though inside yourself you were looking for these, but you were looking everywhere else. You were lost in the world. In a way, your former position was completely hopeless. There was no possibility of success.
That is why God initiated the return. And that is why Heaven looks upon you now to support that return, to encourage it, to strengthen you and to counteract your weak tendencies, fears and self-doubt. You need now great assistance. This will set you on a search for new relationships that represent your destiny and that can support the emerging power and awareness within you.
The return will occupy the remaining years of your life because it is far greater than you realize at this moment. It is not enough to seek healing, for you were not sent into the world to seek healing. There is greater work for you to do. There is a world to serve. There are specific situations that will be yours to attend to. There will be very important relationships to be established. There is great strengthening that must occur and the development of important skills and abilities.
Never think that you just awaken to yourself one day and you are complete, for this is a big mountain to climb, and climb it you must. And gain the strength and the wisdom and the freedom to climb it you must. And to learn of its ways, its pathways, its hazards and its great benefits, you must.
Now your life begins to take a great turn, substantiated by many different steps and stages and situations. Everything around you will begin to change because everything within you is beginning to change. And with it your values, your priorities, what you look for in relationships and communication, what you seek—all will change, as they must.
Here your destiny begins to pull you, for destiny is everything. When you leave this life and return to your Spiritual Family, they will ask you, “Did you accomplish your tasks?” And in that moment, it will be absolutely clear whether you did or did not. There is no condemnation here, but the truth will be entirely evident, and you will see completely, without deception, what must be done. For when you leave this life, you will not have beliefs. You will not have the concerns you have today. You will return to how you really are and to your true condition.
Your Spiritual Family will not be interested in all the things that you did and the places you went and the people you were with and the thrilling things and the disappointing things and all the details of your life, for that is behind you at that point. Their concern is, did you fulfill what you set out to do?
This, then, gives you a sense of what life is really for, and what it is really about, and what is really important, and what will speak to your heart and to your soul. It is not the same things that feed the anxiety or the wandering desires of your mind—your personal mind, your worldly mind.
But you must be very patient, for this is a big mountain and a long journey. And there is more for you to learn and to unlearn, to see and to recognize, more for you to forgive. A different way of being in the world must be established, a different way of being with yourself, a different way of viewing your mind and your body and your circumstances.
Now your greater relationships have a foundation. Now the people you are destined to meet can finally begin to come into your life. But before this could happen, your life must be open and free. If you are bound by your former commitments entirely, you may feel the pull of Heaven, but you cannot move. You will be chained to the ground.
Heaven will bless that which is real in your life from the past, but you have to be open to a whole new reality. This will liberate your mind. This will free your emotions. This will give you the eyes to see and the ears to hear, in time.
You are living now not for yourself alone. You are living for your Spiritual Family. You are living because you are in relationship with Creation beyond the physical realm. Your range of relationship now is expanding. Instead of a lonely, forlorn individual trying to seek happiness and avoid pain and disaster in the world, you are now associating with something magnificent and great.
But it is purposeful. For the journey is not simply to be happy and to experience bliss. For true happiness will come through the fulfillment of your purpose and destiny here. There is no running away into happiness and bliss, as so many people think. For that is not the return.
Only God knows the way. You cannot create it yourself. Nor can anyone else in life. Something greater must be happening. You cannot redeem yourself.
God has sent a New Revelation into the world to speak of these things, to bring great clarity into the world regarding that which is most essential, to clarify the intention and the purpose of your greater nature and the deep relationship you have with those who sent you here and with those who watch over your life once the return has begun. You will not view their presence as an intrusion. You will view it as a great strength and reinforcement and a great blessing.
For now your life has greater importance and a greater possibility. And though you do not understand what this means, or what it will require, or what the journey ahead will bring to you, you follow this because it is so very natural. You follow this because you have been sent here to receive and to follow this.
Here you are not a great savior or a saint. Here you are not given a glorious and profound role. Forget these things. They are attempts to elevate yourself above others, to make yourself significant, to draw others’ attention to you. This is not what We are speaking of at all.
Your role will be simple. It will be humble. It will likely go unnoticed in the world, but it will have a great impact on those people you are destined to serve and to meet. There is no glory or fame here. Do not seek these things, for they will lead you astray.
Now you are coming back into relationship with Creation itself, though you are still in the world as a person carrying out the duties of being a person in the world and dealing with all the difficulties and problems of being a person in the world—your internal problems, the problems with others, the difficulty of communicating with people who do not know how to communicate, the difficulty of being in relationship with people who do not know how to be in a relationship, being with people who have not begun the return, who are still drifting aimlessly and suffering terribly.
Now you are beginning to know things, to see things, to feel things that were not available to you before, for your mind was too taken up and too captivated by the world.
It is not an easy situation. You will feel the suffering of the world. You will feel the suffering of others. You will see how difficult it is to establish a meaningful relationship with people—even the people you have known for a long time, even the people who are close to you. They are not yet responding to what you are responding to. You will feel alone and isolated perhaps, estranged from your former circumstances to a certain degree. This is entirely natural, but you must be reminded of this constantly.
That is why God has provided the Steps to Knowledge, to occupy your mind and to give you strength and reinforcement and a deeper education while you undergo this fundamental and essential transition within yourself.
You are now living at a time of Revelation. The Messenger is in the world. It is the greatest time to be in the world. God has given a New Revelation for humanity. It is of the greatest importance for you. These things We speak of will be difficult to establish in the former traditions because they have been so overlaid with human interpretation, human adaptation and human corruption. You would need a wise teacher within any of the traditions to learn of the things We speak of here today.
Humanity needs a great Revelation now, for the world is entering a period of great travail. And you have come into the world to serve the world in this difficult and challenging time. It is not merely for your own restoration that We speak of these things. It is for the restoration of the world, where you will play your small but important part.
For your liberation will be in part because you are freed from being obsessed with yourself—obsessed with your needs, your problems, your fears, your dilemmas, your conflicts, your difficulties with others, your circumstances, your needs. Your mind will be free now to attend to greater things, which represent the real importance of your life. And you will have to attend to other matters, the practical matters, with great efficiency and clarity.
The return will require a different way of being with everything. But it will not be imposed upon you. It will simply be the natural emergence of Knowledge within you as you take the Steps to Knowledge.
Do not try to convince others. Do not try to teach others. For if the return has not begun in them, they will not understand. And though you may love them and hope for the best for them, it is you who must take this journey now. You are not strong enough or wise enough or clear enough to be a real teacher. And you do not know who to teach or how to teach or what to teach.
You must receive before you can give. You must take the Steps to Knowledge. You must learn what Knowledge will reveal, what must be strengthened, what must be relieved, what must be avoided, how to be with people, who to be with, how to be with them, how to be with yourself, how to see the world without condemnation, how to navigate changing circumstances.
You are standing at the beginning of a great education. You are blessed for this, though you may not feel blessed. You are saved, though you may not feel saved. It is building that which is strong and true and relieving yourself of that which is false and weak that represents the essential pathway that you are on. For this is the return—the return to wholeness, greatness, wisdom, power, contribution.
Finally, you can begin to live the life you were meant to live. Finally, you can begin to take the journey that you must take, that is so different from what you did before. Finally, you have the chance of coming back into true relationship and communication with those in the world and beyond the world who represent your core and fundamental relationships. Finally, you begin to comprehend the real meaning of God’s Power and Presence and how God works within the world, within a world of Separation. Finally, you begin to recognize your value and the value of others and to look on the world with compassion. Finally, you will begin to see what could not be seen before, what could not be heard before and what could not be felt before.
Finally, you have begun the return. ”
